Holland Ave is a stone’s throw from both Commonwealth MRT station and Buona Vista MRT station, which means that it’s very close to Orchard Road (15 mins by bus, 5 mins by cab). If my memory serves me right, a cab ride to Liat Towers would cost less than S$5 (non-peak la). Holland Village is of course a very popular area, especially for expats, what with all their great restaurants and watering holes (‘The Unexpected’ plays at Wala-Wala on Saturdays – one of my fav local bands). 24-hour Cold Storage at Holland Shopping Center, not to mention all sorts of other services. If you’re ever at The Market, I heard that there’s this really cool stall selling fantastic Beef Noodles at $4. Ok, I admit, I spend way too much time there, hah.

Bukit Panjang
One of the things about Bukit Panjang is that it is deceptively close to the city. You could probably reach Orchard Road from Bukit Panjang Plaza in about, 20 minutes, maybe? I remember two years back that it used to cost me less than S$10, but I’m thinking the cab fare will be around S$11 – S$13 now. The nearest MRT station would be located at Choa Chu Kang, and you’d have to take a bus or LRT to get there. Bukit Panjang’s actually a great place to stay if you’re working in Orchard Road due to the lower rent and distance.

Choa Chu Kang
Since I’m staying near Choa Chu Kang, I’m quite familiar with the area. If you’re interested to know a bit more about the area, here’s the Wikipedia site you can go to. Two train stations run through it, Choa Chu Kang MRT and Yew Tee MRT. If you’re taking a cab from CCK MRT to Orchard Road, it would take you roughly 25 – 30 mins and set you back S$14 (I think, after the annoying price hike). Jurong
Jurong is quite a large district and is divided into a western and eastern part. The western part of Jurong is pretty much an industrial area.
Many train stations service this areas: Jurong East MRT, Lakeside MRT, Chinese Garden MRT, Boon Lay MRT, Pioneer MRT and Joo Koon MRT. The last two were opened only early last year. A Tuas MRT station is also under construction.
One of the drawbacks is that it’s (Jurong West) pretty far from the city centre. I haven’t been there in a while so I can’t tell you how much the cab fare would cost, but I suppose it’ll be around S$15.
However, Jurong West is, in our National Development Minister’s words, ‘a gem yet to be uncovered and refined’. There are many interesting developments planned for this area, and I think you’ll find buying a home here a worthwhile investment in 10 – 15 years time. Since I don’t have enough space here to elaborate, I’m just going to go straight to the listings!
